Matthew 22:15-46
“Your mistake,” replied Jesus, “is due to your ignorance of the scriptures, and of the power of God. For at the resurrection, there is no marrying or being married, but all are as angels in heaven. As to the resurrection of the dead, have you not read these words of God to you, ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of dead people but of the living.” The crowds who had been listening to him were greatly struck with his teaching. Matthew 22:29-33
I too was struck by Jesus’ words here. “Your ignorance of … the power of God.”
If you know me very well, or have read my blog much, you know that I have often been heard saying things like, “My God is way bigger than that,” or “stop putting God in a box!”
I think, and this is my personal opinion, that many believers like to say the words that God is all powerful, but in practice tend to put God in a box, — to shrink God.
It really bothers me when people say that we took God out of schools. How exactly would you do that? I was taught that God is omnipotent, God is everywhere all the time. God didn’t leave the schools, silent prayer was never taken away. If your children, aren’t still praying silently before a test (I bet they are) then I have to wonder if that’s because you taught them not to do so, or didn’t teach them TO do so.
It bothers me that believers in God ever think God isn’t here, there, or where ever. There’s a Veggie Tales song called, “God is Bigger Than the Boogieman.” I find myself singing it often in response to situations like this. God is bigger than our imaginations can ever imagine! God can’t be contained, no matter how hard we try.
The thing is, when we feel like God has left, or that God has been removed, or God isn’t present, perhaps it’s because we have closed ourselves off from God. Closed our ears, closed our eyes, closed our hearts.
God is all powerful, that doesn’t mean God interferes, or intervenes, or answers all prayers the way we hope. It means that God is with us.
My point is this, too often we let our ignorance in the power of God show. God is all powerful, that doesn’t mean God’s a magician, but God is everywhere, everything, all at once. God is with us. God is in us. God is us.
And as for the resurrection… see above.
May we know God, may we experience the power of God in our everyday living — the sunrise, the sunset, the falling snow, the cry of a newborn baby, the giggle of a toddler, the hug of a loved one, the smile of a stranger, the flicker of a candle — God is everywhere. May we have eyes to recognize and ears to hear and hearts open to receive.
Until next time…♥️
