Extravagant Love

Mark 14:1-9

This chapter is so full, I decided to break it into smaller bits.  While the chief priests are plotting against Jesus, a woman comes bearing a jar of expensive perfume, that she proceeds to break open and pour over Jesus.

This perfume was worth about a year’s wages.  Some who were there, were aghast at this.  It seemed wasteful to them.  They thought it should have been sold and the money used for the poor.

But Jesus saw it differently, as he would.  He saw her as preparing him for burial. He saw it as devotion and as sacrifice.  He saw it as authentic love.

And shouldn’t our love of Jesus, of God, be one of sacrifice and devotion?

Sometimes, authentic love looks frivolous to those on the outside, to those who aren’t there yet.  Whether it’s in relationships, marital, parental, familial, religious or spiritual, authentic love is extravagant.

Jesus’ love is extravagant.  This is what he teachings show us if we are listening.  This is how he calls us to love one another, extravagantly.

Until next time…♥️
