Yummy Goodness

You guys, the stew from yesterday was wonderful!

I’m not a big stew girl… but I’ve learned to enjoy it from time to time because DH loves it but I out did myself yesterday!  It was delicious.

It’s a recipe from an old church cookbook.  My daddy was the pastor there when I was in high school and college.  I often go to this cookbook when we are looking for comfort food and this stew is just that, comfort food.

I thought I’d share the recipe here with the modifications I made in case you’re looking for a good, comforting stew.

No Peep Stew

2 or 3lbs of stew meat (not browned)
4 or 5 potatoes (I cubed it called for quartered)
2 or 3 carrots (It says halved lengthwise, I put them in my little chopper but left them on the bigger side of diced.)
1 onion (it says sliced, I big diced)
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 16oz can tomato sauce ( I had two 8 oz cans of sauce with basil, garlic and oregano so that’s what I used.)
1 small can of peas (I don’t like peas so I used a small can of French style green beans - it’s what I had, I’ve used cut before too)
1 tsp salt and 1/4 tsp. Garlic salt.

I used my cast iron dutch oven and placed the meat in first and seasoned with garlic salt and pepper. I just eyeballed this.  We like a lot of both so… then I just added the rest as I cut it up ending with the soup and sauce.  I gave it a quick stir and put it in a 275℉ oven for 5ish hours.  I probably left it for about 5½.  Remember it’s no peep so leave it alone.  Don’t open or look at it at all.

Then I mixed up some Jiffy Cornbread  (our favorite) and enjoyed and amazing meal!

Our house smelled amazing all day and I even woke up to the delicious smell of it.

It’s still nice and cool here today and I’m enjoying it.

Tonight we will have homemade pizza!  What do you like on your pizza?  I love sausage, DH loves pepperoni.  We usually add some mushrooms, maybe a few slivers of pepper.  I’d put on some arugula or spinach but DH says that a hard NO.  😂

We always have fun cooking this together.  We argue a little but it’s all in good fun.  It’s like a fun little battle of the chefs. 😂

We used to do this as a family, everyone making their own in cast-iron skillets.  Those Friday or nights are some of DH’s and mine favorite memories of our little family.  I wonder if it’s a tradition that our kids will carry on?  Maybe, maybe not, either way, our grandkids will get to do it with us when they visit as they get older!  There will be plenty more memories to be made with pizza, I’m sure of it!

Until next time ♥️ …

  1. Ooh sherry this does look yummy. Too hot out here to try it yet but can’t wait. I might add some celery and thyme. Was it too watery because you didn’t use flour?
