Adult kids and the holidays

I really worried over Christmas… no-one really warns you about life, especially holidays, with adult children. Adding partners to the mix really changes the way you do holidays. I worried about how I’d feel. No kids here on Christmas Eve or Morning… the thought seemed so sad to me. We have BIG traditions for both and they would be so different this year.

This year DD and FSIL spent them with his family, so it was just DH and me. We had talked for several weeks about how different it would be and that DH, who never really got into the holidays, would have to step up to make it still seem special for me.

I LOVE the holidays! I love everything about them. The music, the movies, the presents, lights, the activities! But without the kids, well, they wouldn’t be the same. I’ve gotten used to DS not being around but DD and I well, we are two peas in a pod! How would this even work?

DH did rise to the occasion in his own way and we had a lovely time. The night before Christmas Eve he took me to walk through a lit up park and it was beautiful! Too crowded but lovely still and then we went to grab a bite to eat at Hawaiian Bros and then drove home slowly noticing the lights on the houses on our way home. Christmas Eve we had a slow easy day and morning and then got ready for church. It was a nice service and then we got the usual Chinese takeout (from a new place that we LOVED!) DD had asked that we wait on her to watch our usual “It’s a Wonderful Life” till she got here on Christmas evening so we found another movie we both loved and watched it. Christmas morning I sighed and tossed until I just couldn’t wait anymore, and finally woke DH up with a loud Merry Christmas! As a kid we got up at 4am! with our kids DH made us wait till 5am and I waited till 6am this year.

We had a nice morning opening gifts and then had a nice relaxed breakfast. No rushing. It was quiet but it wasn’t as bad as I worried it would be. DD and FSIL came that evening and we opened gifts again and had a wonderful dinner together. We hung out watching our movies until bed time.

Then we had more family coming and going nonstop through the New Year and I loved it! I love having family around. We took DD to look and choose a wedding dress and that was soooo fun and YES! She chose a dress! It’s beautiful and so very HER.

We played hard and slept hard, and ate too much but overall had a fabulous holiday season. I hope you did too!

Until next time…♥️
