There are times when overwhelm seems to come out of nowhere.
You might be going through your day as usual, and suddenly everything feels like too much. Your thoughts are racing, your body feels tense, and even small tasks start to feel heavy.
It can be confusing—especially if you can’t point to one specific reason why.
But often, overwhelm isn’t about one moment.
It’s something that builds over time.
Your nervous system is constantly responding to your environment—your thoughts, your responsibilities, your emotions, and even the pace of your day. When it doesn’t get enough time to rest and reset, it can begin to stay in a heightened state.

That’s when you might notice things like:
- Feeling on edge for no clear reason
- Difficulty relaxing, even when you have time
- Mental exhaustion
- A sense of emotional heaviness
This isn’t a sign that something is wrong with you.
It’s your body doing exactly what it was designed to do—protect you.
The challenge is that your body doesn’t always know the difference between a real threat and a full schedule, constant stimulation, or ongoing stress. Over time, it can start to hold that tension as its “normal.”
The good news is, your body also knows how to come back into balance.
And it doesn’t require anything complicated.
Small, consistent moments of pause can begin to shift your nervous system in a powerful way. Even something as simple as slowing your breath, placing your hand on your heart, or grounding your feet on the floor can signal to your body that it’s safe to soften.
These moments may seem small, but they create space.
Space for your body to release tension.
Space for your mind to slow down.
Space for you to reconnect with yourself.
This is something I see often in Reiki sessions—once the body is given the opportunity to relax, it begins to let go of what it’s been holding.
And you can begin to create that shift in your own daily life, one small moment at a time.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed right now, try this:
Pause for just a moment.
Take a slow breath in…
and a longer breath out.
Let your shoulders soften, even slightly.
You don’t need to fix everything at once.
You just need a place to begin.
And your body will meet you there 💜
